Found footage classic Cloverfield ends in supremely bleak fashion for protagonists Rob (Michael Stahl-David) and his girlfriend Beth (Odette Yustman).

After Rob spends most of the movie speeding across New York City to rescue Beth amid the central monster attack, the pair find themselves scrambling to flee the impending carpet-bombing of Manhattan as part of the government's last-ditch attempt to kill the creature.

But in Cloverfield's final moments, with all possible avenues of escape exhausted, all Rob and Beth can do is cower underneath an archway and deliver a final testament to the camera as they wait for Manhattan to be levelled.

In the chilling closing seconds, we hear the pair frantically declare their love for one another before the area is annihilated by the bombs and the movie suddenly ends.

It's uniquely disturbing because it feels so real, that this pair knew they were moments away from death, and so wanted to leave behind one last testimony that maybe, maybe might be discovered.
