10 More Best 'I'm Dead and I Know It' Moments In Apocalypse Horror Movies
8. John Koestler - Knowing
Knowing may be a plenty flawed movie, but it does nevertheless commit to the courage of its convictions where it matters most - that is, right at the end.
Earlier in the film, professor John Koestler (Nicolas Cage) discovers that an extinction-level event is seemingly primed to destroy Earth, and if you assumed the heroes would somehow find a way to prevent this - per Hollywood tradition - you'd be dead wrong.
At the end, a small number of Earth's children are led to safety by extraterrestrial angels, but the overwhelming majority of the world's inhabitants are simply left to be atomised by the impending solar flare.
And so, Knowing's awe-striking closing sequence sees John visit his remaining family, solemnly embrace them, and wait for nature to take its course.
Weird alien angel nonsense aside, it's a laudably ballsy ending for a "crowd-pleasing" sci-fi flick, and a rarest of ones that leaves the imperiled characters accepting of their fate rather than running around screaming frantically.
