Although anyone who looked into the comic events of Infinity War knew what to expect, it’s safe to say the reaction to the deaths of half of the franchise’s most beloved characters came as a huge shock to the vast majority of viewers.

In this, we can see the unexpected yet delightful side benefit of using a format where the tropes of superhero tales aren’t as expected. Heroes die all the time in comics – a superhero can go in an all out explosion, and there’s still a more than solid chance that two issues later, he’s back, bright-eyed and bushy tailed as ever. The fact that the MCU has avoided killing off major characters in any other film serves to make their surprise mass death all the more potent.

While heroes die and come back all the time in comics, however, they don’t die and come back the same in films. Superheroes have fared much, much better survival wise in the vast majority of superhero films, which is what makes their sudden mass deaths all the more potent.
