10 More Criminally Underrated Monster Movies You Need To See
7. Colossal
In Colossal, dysfunctional party girl, Gloria, heads to New York, hoping to start her life anew. Shortly after she arrives, the news reports that a towering monster appeared in South Korea and devastated the capital. When Gloria learns the behemoth is mimicking her mannerisms, she realises she's connected to it.
If you saw Colossal's trailer and worried it revealed too much, that's not the case. Without giving anything away, this fantasy drama is much darker than it seems and goes in directions you don't expect. Although it feels like Colossal will peak at the halfway point, it keeps throwing brand-new ideas at you until the very end.
If you're expecting the movie to discuss the How and Why of Gloria's dilemma, it doesn't. Instead, it centres on how Gloria's newfound power can be used for good or evil. Although she initially sees the monster as a burden, she uses her bond with it to retake control of her life.
If you want a traditional monster movie, Colossal mightn't be for you. But if you are looking for something that subverts expectations, this should hit the spot.
