10 More Criminally Underrated Monster Movies You Need To See

2. Deep Rising

Deep Rising
Buena Vista Pictures

Deep Rising follows a group of sea hijackers, who attempt to take over a cruise ship, only to learn the passengers have been killed by a sea monster.

You can tell the film was written and directed by the same guy behind The Mummy, since it has creative action, cheesy one-liners, impeccable comedy, and genuine scares. In the hands of a lesser filmmaker, trying to juggle all these elements wouldn't work. But somehow, it never feels jarring when a horrifying scene is followed by a hilarious quip.

Because of it's B-movie plot, you'd assume the ensemble would consist of a bunch of nobodies. However, Deep Rising boasts a top-notch cast, including Dijmon Hounsou, Famke Janssen, Jason Flemyng, and Wes Studi.

Then there's the monster itself. Unlike your regular sea beast, this behemoth doesn't eat its victims. Instead, it drinks them. It absorbs all its prey's bodily fluids before vomiting up their remains. Even if you have a stomach of steel, you're guaranteed to feel queasy after seeing this creature barfing up a half-digested human who's still alive.

Deep Rising may have been a financial and critical bomb, but it's easy to see why it's become a cult-classic.
