Near the end of Richard Donner's classic 1985 adventure classic, Data (Jonathan Ke Huy Quan) says, "The octopus was scary"...despite the fact that an octopus is never actually featured in the film.

A deleted sequence was filmed, however, where an octopus attacks Stef (Martha Plimpton) and Mouth (Corey Feldman) in the lagoon, until Data throws a cassette player down the creature's throat, causing it to dance itself away.

The scene was cut for an undisclosed reason, though most fans seem to assume it was likely a result of the prop octopus not being convincing enough.

Still, if there's any movie where a janky octopus would work, it's surely the unapologetically goofy The Goonies, right?

Outrageously, despite being entirely cut from the film, the octopus was still featured in branded trading cards to promote the movie, and was also included in its novelisation.

It's bizarre that the line referring to the octopus was even kept in considering how easily it could've been cut, though perhaps Donner figured audiences would simply laugh at it as a surreal throwaway one-liner.
