7. The Tape Victims - Sinister

While the deaths depicted on the tapes in Sinister may lack the devastating emotional impact of some of the other entries on this list, they warrant inclusion based on just how disturbing they are. The harrowing content of the videos - sharply juxtaposed with their childish, family oriented titles - are absolute nightmare fuel. While notoriously unsettling, the Super 8 tapes are impossible to look away from.

Ethan Hawke's Oswalt discovers said tapes in the attic of his new house. The seemingly innocuous home movies soon reveal their morbid secret as they cut to scenes resembling legitimate snuff films. It's impossible to pick which is the most disturbing example. Pool Party '66 features a mass drowning while Sleepy Time '98 depicts a sleeping family having their throats slit in bed. Hawke literally cannot bear to finish Lawn Work '86, where an entire family was apparently murdered with a f*cking lawn mower.

Cult classic Sinister has garnered a reputation as one of the scariest films ever made so it is hardly surprising that some of the film's deaths are so devastatingly unnerving. Viewers want to look away from the appalling content but find their gaze inexorably drawn to the horrors unfolding onscreen. The home-video style footage adds an unsettling air of realism to proceedings, which makes it all the more horrifying as gruesome mass murders play out in the manner of the most twisted home movie ever made.
