8. Rose - Smile

Smile was one of 2022's more unexpectedly pleasant surprises, receiving rave reviews and grossing a whopping $210 million against a paltry budget of $17 million.

Smile's protagonist, psychiatrist Rose Cotter, becomes haunted by a supernatural entity upon witnessing one of her patients commit suicide while grinning at her. Rose soon discovers a history of suicides - all of whom also witnessed a person smiling dementedly at them before killing themselves. The amount of sheer psychological torment that the doctor undergoes over the course of the film results in one of the more devastating death scenes in recent memory.

Believing that she has escaped the creature, Rose realizes it was only a hallucination - she is still at her old family home, where her tormenter soon emerges to reveal its true form. The enormous monster is a hellish sight, a skinless Russian nesting doll of abhorrent grins. The creature then proceeds to lever her mouth open and force itself inside of her, head first. Paralyzed with fear, Rose is powerless to resist - appropriately paralleled by the audience's complete inability to look away.

Rose's ex-boyfriend Joel breaks through the door of the house just in time to witness her dousing herself in gasoline. Grinning at him like a Satanic Cheshire Cat, Rose sets herself ablaze, passing the curse on to him - a truly horrendous vision that draws the viewer's gaze like a magnet.
