3. Lee Abbott - A Quiet Place

While his son Beau's death in the early goings of A Quiet Place is one of the most heartbreaking demises in horror history, Lee Abbott's final sacrifice in the film's penultimate sequence is just as - if not more - devastating in terms of emotional weight.

Audiences had grown to care deeply for the haunted father. A man whose only objective was to keep his family safe in their hellish new world, John Krasinski's Abbott is an easy character to relate to because he represents the man all fathers hope they could morph into, should the world go to complete and utter sh*t without warning.

Severely wounded in the film's penultimate sequence, Lee realizes that the only way to save his children is to attract the attention of the monstrous creature attacking them. Unadulterated love radiating from his expression as the tender score kicks in, he locks eyes with his deaf daughter before signing to her that he has always loved her, dispelling her fears that he blames her for Beau's death. Krasinski's performance is so mesmerizing that the tearful audience can practically hear him say the words.

Lee's fervent bellow of raw emotion to distract the creature is wordless, but speaks volumes; the impassioned sound of a father finally letting go of the guilt he had carried since watching his son die. A devastatingly beautiful demise, one where the audience is so locked in that they almost forget to blink.
