10 More Disturbing Movie Reveals You Only Notice Rewatching
3. The Black Gloved Hands - Oppenheimer
It's noted during Christopher Nolan's Oscar-winning biopic Oppenheimer that Jean Tatlock, who'd been having an affair with the titular theoretical physicist, eventually died by suicide.
It was tough to fully clock and process each and every detail of the death of the real-life figure played by Florence Pugh as viewers were first absorbing this three-hour epic. But things become that little clearer when returning to Nolan's gigantic dive into J. Robert Oppenheimer's life.
In the brief moments where Jean is shown to have taken sedatives and submerged herself in bath water, there's also a quick shot which shows a pair of black gloves seemingly shoving Tatlock's head into the tub.
As with anything in a Nolan movie, this was no mistake, folks. And it was likely a way of subtly bringing attention to the disturbing real-life theory that Tatlock was assassinated by U.S. Government officials due to her affair and links with the Communist party, as well as conveying Oppenheimer's guilt.
But you'd be forgiven for missing this particular detail during the moment Oppenheimer reveals all to his wife as the unsettling black-gloved moment is somewhat lost in the rest of the intense visualisation of her death during a first viewing.
