10 More Disturbing Movie Reveals You Only Notice Rewatching

2. The Paimon Symbol On The Pole - Hereditary

You don't really have to look too hard to find some utterly distressing details in Ari Aster's chilling supernatural horror picture Hereditary.

But those brave enough to return to this consistent source of dread will be rewarded with a reveal that was pretty tough to fully register before one of the most sickening deaths in movie history.

It's eventually shown that Annie Graham's recently deceased mother Ellen was actually the leader of a cult who worshipped a demon known as Paimon. And following on from the symbol of Paimon being seen on the necklace she was wearing in her coffin at her funeral, that same sign could also be found on a rather important object.

That telephone pole which eventually took young Charlie's head clean off after her brother dodged a dead deer whilst driving? It's also seen boasting that exact same symbol when the two drove past it heading to the party where Charlie would consume a nutty cake that sent her into anaphylactic shock.

Does this symbol being present reveal that the cult had actually planned this gruesome death all along? Well, yes.

According to Aster (via Inverse), Charlie's harrowing demise was entirely “designed by the cult.” So, this first, easily missed glimpse of the Paimon insignia very much revealed that planned bad things were coming for the Graham clan.
