Stephen King's novels have over the years made for some exceptional big screen adaptations, and even in competition with the likes of The Shining, Carrie, and The Shawshank Redemption, you could argue that The Green Mile is up there with the best of them all. Certainly the most emotional and heartbreaking at the very least.

The soul of the story is of course John Coffey, a gentle giant with the power to heal and to resurrect, executed for a crime he didn't commit. You'd struggle to find a more harrowing and disconcerting death scene in cinema history.

One theorist on Reddit couldn't help but notice the similarities between John Coffey and Jesus Christ, going far beyond just their matching initials. There is nothing known about John's background prior to when he is found cradling the young girls he tried to save, and it doesn't seem too unreasonable to think that he was in fact the second coming of Jesus.

Coffey's kind heart proves him the epitome of everything good and pure, he could heal the sick, and he accepted his death sentence, dying for the sins of another man. The Green Mile is full of symbolism, and it's not out of the question that the author had this comparison in mind when crafting the character.
