Hannibal Lecter is one of the most iconic villains in cinematic history, a legacy that Sir Anthony Hopkins cemented with a truly chilling performance and a sucking of his teeth. Dr. Lecter isn't the only villain in The Silence of the Lambs however, as he is joined by Ted Levine's equally disturbing Buffalo Bill.

The two were connected as Bill, otherwise known as Jame Gumb, was briefly a patient of Hannibal's before the latter was consulted on the serial killer while behind bars. Lecter is a scarily intelligent character, and this theory suggests that this is exactly what he planned from as far back as their sessions together.

Not only is Hannibal intelligent, but he is also manipulative and without remorse. He didn't even have to be in the same cell as Miggs to convince him to kill himself, and it's possible that rather than trying to help Gumb with their issues, he pushed them further into the persona of Buffalo Bill in order to create something of a bargaining chip for himself.

He knew that eventually he would be put behind bars, and what better way to negotiate a better life for himself than by having the best possible insight into one of the most notorious serial killers around? Lecter essentially created Buffalo Bill so that when he was in prison, he would be able to use his knowledge almost like currency.
