3. The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)
Renée Jeanne Falconetti delivers, without a doubt, the most powerfully haunting performance in the history of silent cinema as Joan of Arc during the last days of her life. Interestingly enough, the impact the movie will have on the audience is arguably dependent on the score chosen for the film, because director Carl Theodor Dreyer refused to make his own selection. So over the years, musicians and composers have dedicated time and money to writing their own version of the score, and to this day have live orchestras with screenings of the film.
