2. Stalker (1979)
Fans of Andrei Tarkovskys previous film
Solaris will without a doubt find a lot to swoon over with
Stalker, the directors second and last science-fiction film. Much like
Solaris, the film is mostly set in an obscure, nameless setting that is not Earth, or at least not Earth as we recognize it. For those unfamiliar with Tarkovskys style,
Stalker is very slow paced, comes with very few shots, and has 163 minute runtime, so dive into this one at your own risk. Most of the film consists of four man walking, talking, and debating about philosophy and the purpose of life. If that sounds like your cup of tea and are patient, you will find that what it lacks in action it makes up for in beauty, intellect, and ultimately giving a nice spark to those reels in your head. If Criterions Blu-ray restoration of
Solaris is any indication, an upgrade for Stalker would be a nice welcome to their collection indeed.
