10 MORE Great Horror Movies (Nobody Ever Talks About)

7. His House

American Mary
Netflix

His House focuses on two refugees, Bol and Rial, who flee from war-torn South Sudan, hoping to find asylum in Britain.

Now, you might be thinking, "That doesn't sound like a horror movie at all." And that's true. In fact, the first 15 minutes of His House feels like a straight drama.

Although this decision could be quite jarring, it works in the story's favour. Director, Remi Weekes, puts such a focus on the the leads' survivor's guilt, you forget you're watching a haunted house film. You get so lost in Bol and Rial's struggles, you feel blindsided when things start going bump in the night.

Every actor, no matter how small their role, absolutely kills it. Matt Smith has a minor role, but shines every moment he's on-screen. The terror conveyed by our leads, Sope Dirisu and Wunmi Mosaku, is so palpable, it helps you forgive the ropey CGI.

Although Bol and Rial are plagued by haunting visions, that's not the scariest part. There is a revelation near the climax that's so harrowing, it's sure to curdle your blood more than the paranormal elements.
