10 MORE Great Horror Movies (Nobody Ever Talks About)

4. American Mary

If you watch too much horror, you can easily become desensitised to...well.. the horror. After you've seen umpteen stabbings, decapitations, and dismemberments, even the grisliest gore will fail to get your pulse racing.

So, if you're scouring for a really uncomfortable watch, look no further than American Mary. The story revolves around surgical student called Mary who finds herself in debt, forcing to perform extreme body modification on clients. But as her new job seeps into her real life more and more, she worries it will inevitably consume her.

Even though American Mary has an intriguing premise, it could lose focus if it put too much emphasis on gore.

Don't get me wrong - the gore is gross. (Nobody's ready for a scene where a woman gets her vulva sewn shut.)

Thankfully, American Mary transcends schlocky horror by being, above all else, a character study. Katherine Isabelle fits the lead role so well, it's no surprise the directors wrote the character with her in mind.

If you don't mind sleeping with the lights on for a couple of nights, American Mary is worth checking out.
