In this Korean horror, police officer Jong-goo is tasked with finding the source of a deadly virus that has resulted in multiple murders. However, Jong-goo's mission becomes personal when his daughter falls victim to the mysterious disease.

Although the plot sounds straightforward, the film itself is anything but. The Wailing merges many eerie elements, including spirits, zombies, demons, exorcisms, shamans, serial killers, and curses. 

While juggling all that, the paranormal drama somehow finds time to explore conflicts between different cultures' religions, myths, and origins. With so much tossed into the pot, The Wailing could come across as an incomprehensible mess, but esteemed director Na Hong-jin fuses all these factors together with ease, creating a fascinating and truly daunting saga. When it looks like things are about to enter tropey territory, the narrative veers into a new direction, looking at the latest development from a different angle to keep things fresh.
