Anyone who thought The Brothers Grimm stories weren't gruesome enough should set their sights on Tale of Tales. Based on Giambattista Basile's work, this adaptation interweaves three enchanting but dark narratives. The first involves an infertile queen who turns to black magic to bear a child, the second follows a unique contest to decide who weds the princess, and in the third, a pair of crone sisters eagerly try to woo a lustful king.

Though these short tales are significantly different, each highlight how obsession often leads to destruction. As innocent as these obsessions start, they quickly spiral out of control, causing the characters to lose their partners, their children, or their physical being.

Each saga goes through so many twists and turns, it has little resemblance to how it started. One minute, a king is playing with an oversized flea, the next, his daughter is slicing and dicing an ogre. The unconventional structure amplifies the tension, since it's impossible to tell what's around the corner.

Since Tale of Tales doesn't tone down the unpleasant elements synonymous with European folklore, it's a must-watch for horror fans. However, those who were expecting something more Disneyesque should look elsewhere.
