10 More Great Horror Movies Over 2 Hours Long
2. Suspiria (2018)
Suspiria follows aspiring dancer Susie (Dakota Johnson) as she joins a world-class ballet academy. In the end, it's revealed the establishment is run by a coven of witches.
Although the Suspiria remake wasn't expected to be a carbon copy of Dario Argento's original, two significant changes were made that could've hampered the story. At 152 minutes, this reimagining is almost twice as long as the original. And rather than allowing the tutors' secret remain a mystery until the climax, the cat is let out of the bag straightaway.
In the hands of a lesser filmmaker, such decisions could cause the picture to drag or lack tension. However, 2018's Suspiria surpasses the classic version in almost every category. The body horror is taken to an extreme that would give David Cronenberg pause. If the perpetuating atmosphere doesn't churn viewers' insides, the merciless violence will (especially that mirror scene).
Dakota Johnson gives a career-defining performance, while Tilda Swinton has a ball playing three drastically different characters, one of which is the stuff of nightmares. Also, Chloe Grace-Moretz absolutely kills it, despite her minor role.
Anyone who gave Suspiria a miss believing it would be a recreation of its predecessor, should give it a shot.
