10 More Great Movie Scores
1. Vertigo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kC5AzFc3coo In 2012, Vertigo became the reigning champion of the Sight and Sound poll of the best film of all time. The reasons for this are countless, but include career-best performances by Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak, a complex and mysterious plot with even more complex and mysterious subtext. And the score, my god, the score. In a prolific and unrivaled career of composing film scores, the theme to Vertigo is perhaps Bernard Hermann's finest. Recently, the theme from Vertigo was used in another movie, the silent film and current Best Picture The Artist. Upon its release, Kim Novak likened the use of Vertigo's music as a rape of her career. Whether Ms. Novak is right or these are merely the ramblings of a looney old woman, one thing is certain: this score is damn powerful. So, did I miss something?
