10 More Great Teen Horror Movies (No One Ever Talks About)

5. The Blackcoat’s Daughter (2015)

You may recognize writer-director Oz Perkins from the Netflix offering I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, but The Blackcoat’s Daughter is his strong directorial debut that he's yet to outdo. The slow-burn storytelling approach is an approach many horror writers and directors take but few get it right — Oz Perkins is one of them. The movie takes its time setting up its pieces but does so in an unsettling and atmospheric way.

Set during the dead of winter, two young girls, Kat and Rose, spend winter break at their prestigious prep school. Kat, however, is being stalked by an evil entity, one that's beyond what either girl can imagine. Cold and bleak, this is a flick more concerned with creating a tale that gets under your skin than one with cheap jump scares, and the story just keeps getting creepier and creepier until it becomes hard to view, even.

Still, a horror offering that's hard to watch is a horror offering that can't be forgotten. The Blackcoat’s Daughter is so well made, so clever and chilling, it's bound to stick with you long after you've finished it. You'll be staring at the end credits with an overwhelming sense of awe.
