10 MORE Horror Movie Openings That Get Worse The More You Think About It
1. The Lodge
And finally, The Lodge is a terrific but deeply challenging horror film about a stepmother, Grace (Riley Keough), who becomes stranded with her fiancee Richard's (Richard Armitage) two children (Jaeden Martell and Lia McHugh) in a rural lodge at Christmas.
But first, we learn what became of the kids' mother, Laura (Alicia Silverstone).
Richard informs her that he wants to finalise their divorce so he can marry Grace, at which point a distraught Laura leaves, heads come, pours herself a glass of wine, and then calmly shoots herself in the mouth.
The sequence received some pushback from viewers for coming wildly out of left-field and being so triggering for so many, but that is of course precisely the point - suicide and self-harm regularly catches those left behind by devastating surprise, and this scene, in all of shocking suddenness, captures that feeling perfectly.
It's not a scene you'll want to think about very much, if at all honestly, but it's nevertheless a spot-on depiction of how a person's outward appearance can be incredibly deceptive.
