The more you think, the worse they get.

Opening scenes are so important in any type of movie, because as a filmmaker you only get one chance to make a first impression.

But this is perhaps especially important in the horror genre, where the first scene needs to set the mood and tone, and lock the audience in for the white-knuckle thrill-ride to follow.

While many horror movies simply open with a jolting scare sequence to wake viewers up, others dare to offer something with a little more to think about - scenes that only become more unnerving the more you chew them over.

And so, as a sequel to our previous article on the very subject, here are 10 more horror movie openings that just get worse the more you think about them.

Each of these opening scenes is terrific in its own right in a purely surface-level way, but if you dig in and think hard about what you just saw, they only become even more disturbing and terrifying.

In each case, the filmmakers knew precisely how to get audiences gripped from the jump, while ensuring there was plenty extra to consider on repeat viewings...

10. A Quiet Place

A Quiet Place's opening scene is absolutely devastating, as the Abbott family witnesses the loss of their youngest son, Beau (Cade Woodward), when his toy space shuttle make a noise which causes one of the alien creatures to attack him.

It sets a chilling "anyone can die" precedent for the rest of the movie, and while we swiftly cut to one year later, the fallout of Beau's death is worth thinking about for a minute or two.

First and foremost, none of the Abbott family were allowed to properly grieve Beau's death - even in the seconds after he was killed, they evidently had to stifle their natural cries of anguish, internalising all that visceral pain to avoid becoming victims themselves.

Worse still, they presumably couldn't even hold a conventional funeral for their boy, settling instead for leaving a makeshift memorial at the site where he died.

That's... a whole lot of unchecked trauma right there.
