10 MORE Horror Movie Openings That Get Worse The More You Think About It

7. Cloverfield

Though Cloverfield's opening 20 minutes are mostly devoted to introducing us to the doomed central characters, the very first seconds of the movie reveal that the found footage we're about to watch was recovered by the U.S. Department of Defense.

Moreover, the text states that the camera was retrieved at an "incident site," referred to as "area formerly known as Central Park."

That instantly lets the audience know that something very, very bad is going to happen to New York City's Central Park before film's end, because if it's no longer known by that name, then it's very clearly been wiped off the map.

And of course, that's absolutely what happens in the film's ending when the Hammer Down Protocol annihilates Manhattan, and evidently Central Park, in an attempt to kill the titular monster.

Given that the film ends immediately after the bombs are dropped, though, we're left to consider what the aftermath looks like for ourselves.

Clearly, Central Park is no more, and presumably a large chunk of New York City, but what has been erected in its place? A memorial? Or were efforts made to rebuild Central Park?
