10 More Horror Movie Performances That Proved EVERYONE Wrong

2. John Goodman - 10 Cloverfield Lane

John Goodman is one of those actors who is a lot of different things to a lot of different people.

To some, he’s the gun-toting maverick Walter Sobchak from The Big Lebowski. To others, he’s the voice of Sully, the good guy monster from Pixar’s Monster’s Inc. And, if you’re really old, he’s Dan from Roseanne.

In 2016, he became something else entirely when he joined the very minimal cast of 10 Cloverfield Lane. Goodman plays Howard Stambler, one of three people trapped in an underground bunker after a “world-ending event” happens on the surface. The reason that’s in quotation marks is because Michelle, another inhabitant, is sceptical that her fellow tenants are telling the truth, or if this is all some masterplan by Howard to keep them trapped there.

This fantastically claustrophobic film hinges on Goodman bringing a mixture of normalcy but also quiet terror to Howard’s character, He is, on the surface, just an ordinary man, but in this confined world, he poses more of a threat than anyone could possibly realise.

John Goodman was absolutely terrific in this role and a large reason why 10 Cloverfield Lane is so good.
