10 More Horror Movie Performances That Proved EVERYONE Wrong

3. Robin Williams - One Hour Photo

The Serpent and the Rainbow
Fox Searchlight

Whilst the late great Robin Williams will always be fondly remembered for the countless times he made people laugh, he was much more than a funnyman. He was a four-time Oscar nominee, which included a Best Supporting Actor win for his part in Good Will Hunting, and his lengthy career took him to all sorts of places, including some movies that required him to play the straight man.

One film that sticks out like a sore thumb from the rest of his catalogue is 2002’s One Hour Photo, in which he plays Sy, a technician at a photography store. Sy lives a lonely existence with no family or friends to call his own and forms an unhealthy relationship with a family of customers. When his perception of their perfect life is shattered, he decides to make their life a living hell.

Considering this is the guy who once played a live-action version of Popeye, it’s remarkable that Williams manages to be so terrifying in this film. He plays Sy with a dead-eyed emptiness that makes you believe he is capable of anything - a stunning reversal of his usual type.
