10 MORE Horror Movie Villains Who Broke Their Own Rules

9. Pinhead - Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth

In the first two Hellraiser movies, Pinhead (Doug Bradley) and the Cenobites he leads are effectively a neutral force from Hell - in his own words, "demons to some, angels to others" - but that all changes in Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth.

After Pinhead's human form, Captain Elliot Spencer, was killed at the end of the second film, Pinhead was basically left without the balancing force of Spencer's humanity, allowing him to wreak havoc at will. This flies in the face of the Cenobite code, resulting in a far more outwardly villainous depiction of Pinhead than in the first two movies, leaving many bitterly disappointed.

Pinhead's depiction has wavered considerably throughout the franchise ever since, pinballing between concrete villainy and a more ambiguous disposition, ensuring it's been tough to get a clear bead on the guy. Then again, given the tawdry state of the series on the whole, it's not terribly surprising that Pinhead's characterisation is flagrantly schizophrenic.
