10 More Horror Movies Everyone Wished Were Way Crazier

M. Night Shyamalan has been called many things over the years, but very rarely is he called boring. Even his most ridiculous films have something outlandish to cling to, with the exception of this 2008 release starring Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel as a couple trying to keep their children safe during a global outbreak of mass suicide.

As with all of Shyamalan's projects, The Happening contains a big twist that is about to be spoiled, so look away now if you don't want to know. Markie Mark discovers midway through the movie that the suicides are being caused by... plants. Yep. Plants.

Tired of being stepped on by humanity (figuratively and literally) the world's flora has developed a toxin that causes people to go crazy, leading to the apocalypse. So, what are the characters meant to do about that? Pluck each individual blade of grass from the ground? Declare war on peace lilies? Get a cow?

It may have been unexpected, but the plant twist doesn't do anything to make The Happening compelling. Somehow, a movie about millions of people killing themselves is flat and uninspiring. Only Shyamalan could pull off this kind of stunt.
