10 MORE Horror Movies That Broke All The Rules

7. Happy Hauntings - The Black Coat's Daughter

Another film that breaks rules in far more subtle ways - and has remained largely underrated for it since its release in 2015 - is The Black Coat's Daughter (which has also been banded about as February, if it doesn't sound familiar). A film that's pieced together between two timelines played by two glaringly different actresses despite embodying the same person, it's a strange concept to begin with, and suits studio A24's dreamy experimental style down to the ground.

What makes this a rule-breaking title is its ability to offer up another perspective on possession. Young girl Kat seemingly wilfully hunts out a demon to inhabit her body with her, and desperately seeks it out again in later life when it's exorcised. It's a film about loneliness and isolation, and delivers comfort in the darkest of places that casts a whole new light on the 'weak little girl taken over by an evil entity' trope that has permeated the genre since The Exorcist.

Whilst subtle, it offers a lot more to think about in its closing moments than other movies of its kind, offering a symbiotic relationship with a demon rather than a parasitic one. It puts the concept of horror into a wildly different perspective.
