10 MORE Horror Movies That Broke All The Rules

8. Paranormal Zombies - [REC] & [REC] 2

Revenge Movie
Magnolia Pictures

Who says that zombies have to be born from biological science experiments going wrong? [REC] doesn't, as the film franchise wafted a big old breath of fresh air into the subgenre with its innovative approach to infection - [REC] 2 in particular makes the quandary of where zombies come from just as scary as the same question about babies.

Establishing a virus that has been accidentally decocted from demonic possession, [REC] seamlessly combines two powerhouse concepts into one terrifying monster, then explores these effects in the sequel. It isn't often that a film comes along and so easily flips everything we thought we knew on its head, since we've always experienced zombies as classic laboratory creations gone wrong rather than as supernatural entities.

The result is an unpredictable nightmare that sprawls these two movies in excellent spooky fashion, bringing the Vatican and scientific research hand in hand in a way that hasn't really been replicated since. Whilst the following movies weren't much to shout about, [REC] & [REC] 2 have remained classics for a reason: they changed the script on what a classic horror monster (we think we already know) can be.
