2018's Suspiria is not just one of the best horror remakes of all time, it's also one of the maddest horror films you'll ever watch, so much so that Tilda Swinton playing an elderly German man isn't even the tenth weirdest thing in it.

Like the Giallo classic it loosely remakes, Suspiria is set in a German dance school that's actually run by a coven of witches, and it consistently swings for the fences with all of its craziness. It establishes this from the very start, as the opening title card reads 'Six Acts and an Epilogue in a Divided Berlin'. Nevertheless, like many great films, it saves the hardest punch for last.

The coven is preparing to use American dance student Susie (Dakota Johnson) as a vessel for Mother Markos, whose body is now withered and decrepit, but it turns out that Susie is hiding a huge secret. She is actually a witch herself, and she's come to reclaim the coven.

So begins one of the most insane horror movie endings ever crafted, a red-tinged and ingeniously directed tour de force in which Susie (or rather, Mother Suspiriorum) summons the spirits of death and massacres Markos and all of her supporters. The witches explode in showers of gore, while the other students continue to do an unhinged dance, and Thom Yorke's score hauntingly echoes through the scene.

It's unhinged in the extreme, and you'll never be able to forget it. Then again, would anyone want to?
