10 More Horror Movies That Tricked You Into Rooting For The Villain

7. Carietta "Carrie" White - Carrie

May 2002
Warner Bros. Pictures

Stephen King's debut novel, Carrie, was such a hit, it was adapted for the big screen only two years after the book was published.

The story revolves around telekinetic high-schooler Carrie White, who's bullied relentlessly by her overbearingly religious mother and her classmates. When her tormentors drop a bucket of pig's blood on her during her prom, Carrie snaps, and uses her psychic powers to burn the school down, killing dozens of students and teachers. She then leaves the building, blows up a few cars, and kills her mother before incinerating her own house.

Brian De Palma's film is so good at making you root for the villain, you genuinely forget Carrie is the villain! Although she exacted her revenge on the people who made her life miserable, many people who perished in the prom took no part in the pig blood prank. Even though Carrie is fully aware of this, she is consumed with such unbridled rage by this point, she doesn't seem to care. So, when she's burning her victims to death, that's not vengeance - that's cold-blooded murder.
