10 More Horror Movies That Tricked You Into Rooting For The Villain

8. Daniel Robitaille - Candyman

May 2002
TriStar Pictures

In Candyman, a grad student called Helen hears an urban legend about a murderous spectre called Daniel Robitaille. Daniel was an Afro-American who fell in love with a Caucasian girl during the 19th century when interracial relationships were illegal. When the girl fell pregnant with his child, her father chopped Daniel's hand off before feeding him to a swarm of bees. Daniel was so consumed with rage, he was reborn as a spirit who kills anyone who dares to say "Candyman" five times in front of a mirror.

Skeptical of the legend, Helen tries summoning Daniel by performing the ritual. (Let's be honest - who hasn't tried it?) Sadly, Helen learns the Candyman myth is very real since Daniel goes on a killing streak after she summons him.

Even though the titular villain could easily come across as a generic maniac, the actor, Tony Todd, portrays him like a tragic figure. He explains to Helen that he must shed blood after being summoned or the injustice he suffered would be lost in time.

Also, if you don't want to be killed by him, just don't say his name!
