10 MORE Horror Movies Where The Monster Isn't The Villain
6. The Messengers
In The Messengers, Roy Solomon and his family move into a farmhouse that was abruptly abandoned six years prior by the former tenants, the Rollins.
The Solomons are repeatedly pestered by crows, urging Roy to hire a farmhand called John Burwell. Just when it looks like things are calming down, though, the Solomons are tormented by the ghosts of a mother and her children. Looking for clues behind the haunting, Roy's daughter Jess discovers a picture of the mother when she was alive. Jess then finds a newspaper clipping soon after, revealing the ghost was married to John.
It turns out John lost his mind when his family left him, driving him to murder them all. The incident left John so unstable, he's convinced the Solomons are his family, and he intends to kill them to stop them from abandoning him.
Like What Lies Beneath, the ghost meant no harm towards the protagonist and was trying to warn her about her killer. So, if your house is ever haunted, consider the spirits are warning you that somebody is plotting to murder you. I'm sure that's more reassuring.
