10 More Horror Movies With Seriously Messed Up Endings

7. Mirrors

The Dark and the Wicked
20th Century Fox

In a quest to find a decent image of Mirrors' ending, your scribe here discovered the haunting belief that handprints on mirrors could be someone reaching out to you from the afterlife. The things we do for our audience here at WhatCulture Horror...

Away from this supposed phenomena - seriously, Google is your friend - Alexandre Aja's 2008 Mirrors ends with a monumental shocker, as Kiefer Sutherland's Ben Carson realises he's dead and stranded in the paradoxical mirror world.

Prior to this, Ben had found himself in the midst of a plot involving evil mirror versions of people, demonic possession, and had his family targeted by the sinister past of the Mayflower department store where he works.

The final act of Mirrors sees Ben in the depths of the Mayflower - which, of course, used to be a psychiatric hospital - in a fight to save his son. In order to take down the demonic threat of the day, Ben explodes a gas line and brings down the entire building, before then emerging from the rubble to make it to safety.

As the penny drops, we see all the signs are written backwards now, and that Ben is actually within the mirror world, having not made it out of the building collapse alive.

Once described as the Swiss Army Knife of WhatCulture, Andrew can usually be found writing, editing, or presenting on a wide range of topics. As a lifelong wrestling fan, horror obsessive, and comic book nerd, he's been covering those topics professionally as far back as 2010.
