4. Brundlefly - The Fly

David Cronenberg's Fly remake centres around brilliant scientist Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum), who has invented a teleportation device.

When he teleports himself, Brundle is oblivious that a housefly entered the Telepod, fusing its DNA with his. At first, Seth is overjoyed by this accident since he gains the positive traits of an insect, including heightened reflexes, strength, and alertness.

But as his body starts to deteriorate, Brundle realises it's only a matter of time before he becomes more fly than human. Desperate to be with his girlfriend Ronnie, Goldblum's character attempts to drag her into the Telepod with him, merging them together forever.

As Ronnie fights back, she accidentally rips off Brundle's jaw, triggering his final metamorphosis. His skin peels away, exposing his chitin exoskeleton underneath. As Ronnie is forced to look on in horror, Brundle's face bursts open, revealing his bug-like visage.

Rather than having Brundle's final incarnation appear malignant or evil, the monster's design conveys deep sadness and immense pain. As haunting as this transformation is, the reason it's imprinted in viewers' minds is how it successfully depicts the Brundlefly as a tragic figure.
