10 More Horror Movies With The Worst Monster Reveal
6. Hugh Craine - The Haunting
CGI was all the rage during the turn of the millennium, encouraging filmmakers to stuff their projects with special effects. Although there's nothing wrong with incorporating computer-generated visuals into a movie, it becomes a problem when it's pointless, unconvincing, and relentless.
Which brings us to 1999's The Haunting. Rather than using subtle horror elements like the 1963 version, the remake relies on CGI to create unintentionally hilarious visuals, including frowning windows, screaming baby statues, and a door punching a woman. (That scene is as ridiculous as it sounds.)
Even though The Haunting is a goldmine for poor VFX, it saves the worst for the finale. In the last scene, the main cast are confronted by the ghost safeguarding the haunted mansion, Hugh Craine.
Standing 50ft tall, this colossal phantom should be wet-your-pants terrifying. But since Crane resembles a shadowy blob with an uncanny valley face slapped in the middle, this visual doesn't just look bad, but unfinished. (By the way, this looked terrible, even back in 1999.)
The only redeemable thing about Craine's pitiful design is the fact it distracts viewers from the scene's woeful dialogue.
