Even accepting the considerable controversies surrounding director David O. Russell, on paper it sure seemed like his most recent film Amsterdam was going to make a serious splash at the Oscars.

Given Russell's prior pedigree delivering award-winning hits like Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, it was reasonable to assume that his new period mystery comedy would similarly be on everybody's lips throughout 2022's awards season.

Yet even with a staggeringly appealing cast - including Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, John David Washington, Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Zoe SaldaƱa, Rami Malek, Robert De Niro, and even Taylor freakin' Swift - Amsterdam came and went with barely a peep.

First and foremost, the film's reviews were wildly mixed, with critics surmising that Russell's shapeless, sketchy genre-hopping exercise was more confusing and rough-hewn than entertaining.

General audiences didn't fare any better, largely failing to turn out for the film at all, leaving it to flop at the box office. And to further rub salt in the wound, it didn't receive even a single Oscar nomination.

Amsterdam was rejected by critics, punters, and awards bodies all at once, ensuring that within a week or two of its theatrical release, it had exited the public consciousness, leaving no trace behind whatsoever.
