10 More Insane Movie Theories That Actually Make Sense
7. An Unreliable Narrator - Pirates Of The Caribbean
There are plenty of different ways a movie can tell a story, and the audience essentially has to trust what they are being told. There is no other point of reference, so they are captive to the way the events unfold on the screen.
However, there are plenty of movies that are told from the point of view of an unreliable narrator. This is where the events mislead the audience, similar to how Teddy Daniels' perspective in Shutter Island is completely skewed, allowing for the shock twist at the end of the film.
What if this was the case with the Pirates of the Caribbean movies? The most famous story about Jack Sparrow, arguably the most famous pirate in the world, is that he escaped being marooned by the crew of the Black Pearl by riding on the backs of sea turtles. This was, of course, a lie, but it shows how the man can exaggerate.
This theory specifically focuses on the fourth Pirates movie, On Stranger Tides, and suggests that Jack could be the one telling these stories. This would be why some of his escapades are so over the top, spectacular, and downright impossible. They are all exaggerations courtesy of Jack's storytelling. There is no way he could have known exactly where to place a napkin on the floor for a guard to slip on it a full five minutes later, hence, Jack is the unreliable narrator sensationalising his story at every opportunity.
