10 More Movie Mistakes That Became Canon

Throughout Roman Polanski's noir classic Chinatown, the villainous tyrant Noah Cross (John Huston) pronounces protagonist Jake Gittes' (Jack Nicholson) surname incorrectly, basically ignoring the letter "e" and verbalising it as "Gitts" instead of "Gitt-iss."

You probably assumed this was an intentional flourish in the film's script, but not quite. 

During shooting, John Huston struggled to pronounce Gittes' name correctly, but because Polanski felt that it perfectly suited Cross' arrogant slimeball character to consistently get the private investigator's name wrong, it was worked into the fabric of the movie itself.

Polanski added a brief beat where Gittes tries to correct Cross' pronunciation during their first meeting and it doesn't stick, only further underlying that this wealthy industrialist and crime lord basically sees himself above such fanciful nonsense as remembering the names of the people he's working with.

It's one of those perfect mistakes you'd never guess was anything other than completely intentional. Bravo.
