10 More Movies Already Cancelled In 2019 (And Why)
5. Are You Afraid Of The Dark?
What We Knew
Nickelodeon's legendary 1990s kids horror-fantasy series Are You Afraid of the Dark? was announced for a film adaptation at Paramount in 2017, with It screenwriter Gary Dauberman set to write, while D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, xXx: Return of Xander Cag) was hired to direct for a planned October 4, 2019 release.
Given the potent nostalgia for the series and the commercial success of the first Goosebumps movie, it was really just a matter of time before Hollywood picked this one up.
Why It Was Cancelled & The Future
Earlier this year, Paramount made some changes to their schedule, which resulted in Are You Afraid of the Dark? being pulled completely, with no new release date assigned to it nor no explanation given for the removal.
Though some have speculated that Paramount wanted to move the film away from the upcoming Guillermo del Toro-produced Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, it's extremely uncommon for studios to suddenly pull a coming-together project from the slate without explaining why.
Four months later, we've still heard nothing, seeming to confirm rumours that the film has been binned. As such, fans will instead have to settle for the mini-series revival set to drop this Halloween.
