8. The Far Horizons (1955)

The Greatest Showman Hugh Jackman
Pine-Thomas Productions

Released in 1955, The Far Horizons showcased the expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the western part of North America. Also on the journey was a Shoshone woman named Sacagawea, who served as a guide and a translator.

Crucially, the film tells you that Clark and Sacagawea fell for each other and had a passionate romance. There is no indication of this in historical records, which is a good thing because Sacagawea was married to a French Canadian man named Toussaint Charbonneau, who was also on the expedition.

Charbonneau is featured in the film, but their marriage is decidedly and oddly left out. On top of that, Sacagawea actually gave birth to their son while on the expedition, whom she is portrayed as carrying on the U.S. $1 coin bearing her likeness.

Also, while perhaps not a historical inaccuracy, an argument can easily be made for it being very uncomfortable to watch Donna Reed layered with dark make-up to play Sacagawea.

I like to think I'm a clever person, but apparently I'm not clever enough to come up with a witty biography.
