3. Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007)

The Greatest Showman Hugh Jackman
Universal Pictures

Elizabeth: The Golden Age is a follow-up to 1998's Elizabeth. Both portray Queen Elizabeth I and both take some historical liberties. But while the first film was a critical success, the sequel was very much not, despite winning an Oscar for its costume design and seeing Cate Blanchett nominated for Best Actress.

The inaccuracies are many, likely too many to go over here, so instead - some highlights. In the film, there are those still trying to persuade the Queen to marry and produce and heir, even though at the time of the real events she was well into her 50s and most understood the unlikelihood of her having a child. Walter Raleigh is portrayed as a naval hero doing sea battle against the Spanish when in reality he is believed to have remained in Devon during the conflict.

Similarly, the Queen is shown as riding gallantly out with her troops to energetically deliver her famous Tilbury Speech. In truth, Elizabeth gave the speech before the troops rode out in a manner which has been described as 'eloquent'.

I like to think I'm a clever person, but apparently I'm not clever enough to come up with a witty biography.
