It takes some serious balls to even attempt to outdo 1922's iconic horror masterpiece Nosferatu, but Robert Eggers is no regular filmmaker, and this remake was a passion project which he spent the better part of a decade developing.

Eggers certainly used a century's worth of progress - both technological and social - to deliver what feels like the truly definitive rendition of this story, inspired by Bram Stoker's Dracula as Nosferatu is.

For starters, Eggers made the striking decision to give Nosferatu (Bill SkarsgÄrd) a large, bushy moustache, which works in stark contrast to the character's more immediately monstrous appearance in the 1922 film.

Here the mustache reminds us that Nosferatu is effectively an undead nobleman, ensuring there's an ever-visible tether to his humanity. It's a choice which some audiences found unintentionally comical, but it absolutely works.

Beyond this, Eggers also amped up the violence to levels that the original film simply couldn't, and best of all, it offered a more feminist reading of the story, granting Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp) more agency throughout.

Eggers basically did the thing few thought possible - he confidently remade one of the most iconic horror films of all time and decisively improved upon it.
