10 More Movies That Have Different Endings In Different Countries
4. King Kong Vs. Godzilla
Long before Godzilla and Kong romped around Hong Kong and came away pals in their CGI-laden 2021 hit, they went toe-to-toe at the summit of Mount Fuji in IshirÅ Honda's practical effects kaiju classic King Kong vs. Godzilla.
The film's ending sees this clash of titans end underwater, with Kong emerging victorious and Godzilla presumed dead. And while there was a change to this ending for the US market, it's not what everyone thinks.
For years, there was a rumour in the West that claimed that the original Japanese release of King Kong vs. Godzilla featured an ending in which the giant lizard wins - with the thinking presumably being that Japanese audiences would prefer their guy to come out on top. This myth became so widespread, that a variety of reputable publications reported it around the time of release, which inspired many more in the decades to come. Although this is not the case at all, there is still an inkling of truth behind it.
There are in fact two small differences in the endings of the Western and Asian releases of King Kong vs. Godzilla. In the US release, Kong roars on his own during the film's pre-credits fade to black, while in the Japanese release, both Godzilla and King Kong's roars are heard. A marginal difference, maybe, but it really has made waves in the years since.
