10 More Movies That Killed Completely The Wrong Character

1. Darth Maul: The Phantom Menace

The Death: Unfortunately, George Lucas messed it his Star Wars prequel trilogy up. Darth Maul gets the chop (literally) with Obi-Wan slicing him in half and, with it, leaving the saga a mountain to climb. Count Dooku came in next but his character was drab and dreary compared to Maul who, without doubt, should have been used right up until Anakin Skywalker’s transformation into Darth Vader. A huge case of what might have been - even if he was later brought back from the dead via the Clone Wars and Rebels TV series.

Who Should Have Died Instead: Jar Jar Binks, Boss Nass, take your pick

There can be no denying the 1998’s The Phantom Menace lacks the sparkle of its original predecessors and brought in pointless characters in the form of Jar Jar Binks, Qui-Gon Jinn and Boss Nass. Maul, though, was a rare success with the character instantly seeing Lucasfilm's merchandise profits soar and, prior to the film's release, was being tipped to go down in Star Wars folklore as a character capable of rivalling Darth Vader for baddie of the series.

It speaks volumes of Maul’s popularity that a character who speaks just 31 words throughout the entire film is held in such high regard by even the snobbiest of Star Wars fans. Forget the fact he only features in a handful of scenes, his memorable red and black face paint lingers in the memory and his double-bladed lightsaber makes him one of the most formidable sword fighters of all time. The same cannot be said for the likes of Jar Jar and Boss Nass.

These characters are two of the worst EVER TO BE PUT ON A CINEMA screen. Jar Jar is sheer annoying with Lucas horrifically misjudging the character who he thought would have the same loveable charm as the Ewoks from Return of the Jedi, while Boss Nass was so pointless it is a miracle no investigation has ever been launched to get to the point of what purpose his character actually served. Maul deserved better.

Sport and Film. I love them both. And I'm extremely lucky to write about two of my biggest passions in life. Most of the time, I'm at the Daily Express newspaper writing about football, tennis and F1. But, when I'm out of there, I let my imagination run wild and pen down my thoughts on the film series' I love. WhatCulture gives me the chance to write about the movie industry - an industry I really care about. And for that, I'm extremely grateful. And hope you, if you're reading this, enjoy what I think about stuff.
