10 MORE Ridiculous Horror Movie Villains That Shouldn’t Have Worked… But Did
2. Grumpy, Disillusioned Chef - The Menu (2022)
In real life, when a chef has had enough of the job and either lost the passion they started with, or the customers who made their effort worthwhile, they either hang on for the paycheque or slink off to pastures new. Not so for the antagonist of Mark Mylod's The Menu, Chef Julian Slowik (Ralph Fiennes).
Julian invites a specially selected group of elite, wealthy and privileged clientele to his exclusive restaurant on a remote island for a dining experience quite unlike any other. Once he has them there, he serves up an increasingly barmy and bloody series of courses, with the guests themselves as the dessert - s'mores, extra crispy.
At face value, a pissed off chef with a bone to pick with his arrogant, undeserving and ungrateful clients doesn't sound like a winning horror movie villain. On the one hand, cooking an elaborate meal, is not very creepy; on the other, the absurd lengths to which he goes in order to serve up courses ladled with meaning and designed to strike fear into his patrons is as unnerving as it is strange. The control Julian exerts over the entire experience is what makes him so frightening, right up to and including the conclusive suicide bombing of the restaurant, mutually agreed upon by his team of staff.
He will certainly make us think twice before ever sending a dish back to the kitchen again.
