Often, the best way of doing this is to make a killer opening that instills a bit of hope into a viewer that what they're about to watch is a worthwhile endeavor - but the wonderful Evil Dead is only just getting started with its gnarly opening gambit.

Presented with a bloodied girl wandering through a forest, it's soon revealed that she's being hunted. Of course, you'd assume by virtue of horror movie tropes that it's an innocent woman on the run from depraved backwoods locals, and that's precisely how the scene plays out for the most part.

It's only when her dad steps forward to condemn the girl for killing her mother that her desperate pleas begin to ring false. Strapped to a pyre and set alight, something is definitely not right with our dear sweet daughter - as a demonic presence makes itself known and gets real nasty with daddy. It's visceral, gory, and exceptionally over the top - but then Evil Dead is all of those things and more in all its forms.
