5. The Fungus - Splinter
Before The Last of Us scared everybody into thinking that fungi could turn humanity into mind-controlled drones, there was Splinter.
In Toby Wilkins' body horror, a young couple seek shelter at a gas station after their vehicle gets a flat tyre. However, things take a dark turn when they're attacked by a deranged pump attendant who's covered in thorns. Over time, they discover that several locals have been exposed to a toxic fungus, turning them into spike-covered zombies.
Unlike typical zombies, the infected spread the virus through their thorns. They can shoot their quills like a porcupine, allowing them to infect their prey while keeping their distance. An infected can use its thorns to "sow" itself to another, making itself larger and more dangerous.
Although regular zombies can be terminated with a headshot, this prickly bunch are much harder to kill off. Not only can this undead lot shrug off bullets, their limbs continue to function after being separated from the body. After an infected loses its hand, the Addams Family-like critter crawls around the shop, still driven by the fiendish fungus.
An evil mushroom that turns people into hedgehog-like zombies may sound laughable at first, but Splinter executes this concept with frightful effect.
